May 14th Baseball Betting: The Big Exhale

That sigh of relief you heard from all over the world this morning means that we’re officially out of the sentimental holiday season (Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day) and into the drinking holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Every Summer Day.) What a better way to kick of the season than by building our bankroll. There is no shortage of betting options tonight so let’s take a look at some of the best ones.

Mother's Day Monday is almost as exciting as nudie magazine day.

San Diego Padres @ Washington Nationals
The Nationals are about to go on a streak and it starts tonight against the struggling San Diego Padres. The ‘Natties almost had a sweep at Cincinnati if it wasn’t for Joey Votto exploding for 3HR & 6RBI’s and now they’re looking at 7 straight home tilts. Tonight’s pitcher Ross Detwiler has a 2.10 ERA and the rotation at a whole has an ERA of 2.28 in Washington. There’s decent value in tonight’s -150 line and that’s who we’ll ride…take Washington -150

Chicago Cubs @ St. Louis Cardinals
Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster is on pace to win the Cy Young…only his record doing so might be 1-1. Dempster’s ERA on the year is 1.02, he’s holding opponents to an average of .164, he’s struck out 36 in 35-1/3 innings…and he’s 0-1 to show for it. Dempster must have a tendency to ogle his teammate’s wives or something because there only supporting him with just over 2 runs a game. By contrast, the Cardinals are putting up around 8 runs for tonight’s starter Jake Westbrook. Tonight, there’s just too much value in the Cubs at +143 and we’ll hope Dempster kept his eyes to himself in honor of mothers day…take the Cubs +143.

New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles
At first glance, I had the gut feeling of taking the Yankees with pretty good value at -113. The more I thought about it, this is Baltimore’s game to win. The O’s won 2 out of 3 against the Rays over the weekend and trot Jason Hammel to the mound who is 4-1 with a 2.09 ERA. True, his lone loss was to the Yankees but he only yielded two runs in that defeat. I was hoping the public consensus could’ve shifted my wager but it’s 50-50 betting tonight. Take the home team with value and in a big spot tonight with Baltimore +103

I'm surprised more baseball teams named after birds don't call their stadium the nest?

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Miami Marlins
Ozzie Guillen’s Marlins are slowly climbing their way out of the sinkhole they put themselves into at the beginning of the year, winning 11 of their last 13 games. They probably wish Pittsburgh was in town for more than two nights because they offer Miami a good chance of staying hot. The South Beachers have taken 8 straight from the Steel City Hu$tlers and I don’t see them having a problem continuing that streak tonight. Take Miami -1.5 for +115

Detroit Tigers @ Chicago White Sox
The Sox were beaten 5-0 by KC Saturday then promptly gave up 9 straight runs on Sunday after starting the game 1-0 so you could say they’re in a slump. Detroit comes to town only a game out first and they look for Drew Smyly (1-0 1.59 ERA) to keep the frowns on the Sox batters. I like the over 8 here but I think Detroit -130 is a better bet.

Tonight’s the night we start our “Bankroll To Memorial Day”…hopefully they won’t be playing ‘Taps’ for our wallets.
